An Ontario woman is facing weapons-related charges after police said Pokemon Go players were shot at with a pellet gun over the weekend.

York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden told CTV News Channel that the incident occurred in Newmarket, near Main Street South and Water Street, around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

When officers arrived on the scene, they were directed to a two-storey apartment building, where witnesses said they had seen a female on the roof, shooting pellets from handgun-style weapon, according to a written statement said.

"Officers attended the suspect's residence inside the apartment building and she was taken into custody without further incident and the pellet gun was seized,” the statement went on.

"It is believed that the suspect fired at least four shots at the people playing Pokemon Go, but none were struck and there were no injuries," the statement went on.

Patricia Champagne, 29, has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Pattenden said that police have received “a lot of calls” from suspicious residents reporting groups of people staring at smartphones in places where people don’t normally gather.

“We’re responding to them, investigating them and finding out it’s just people of all ages playing this game,” he said.

Pattenden said police are reminding Pokemon Go players not to trespass on private property.
