Greenery

  • The Greenery is a commercial-scale, vertical, hydroponic farm built inside a shipping container. The Greenery uses vertical farming methods and a closed-loop system to create a highly water-efficient and productive, compact growing space. One Greenery can grow 2–6 tons of produce annually. • The Greenery™ costs between $165,000 and $169,000 USD, depending on the model and electrical specifications for your specific location. Also consider the shipping fee, which varies based on your installation’s distance from Boston. Total start-up costs range depending on where your farm is being shipped, the training package you chose, and any additional offers that were included.

  • Electricity usage in the Greenery S is necessary to power different systems like lighting, pumps, fans, and environmental controls, among others. The variation in electricity usage depends on factors such as crop types, inside humidity levels, and the outside climate. It is essential to optimize the controllable factors to ensure the lowest possible energy use.

The Greenery S offers three pre-set LED power modes that operators can select depending on their growing objectives. Each mode has a range of electricity usage and an impact on yield output.

    • Eco Mode (151–246 kWh per day)

    • Standard Mode (171–268 kWh per day)

    • Performance Mode (191–350 kWh per day)

It is recommended to consult with us for a better understanding of potential electricity usage based on your unique situation.

  • Aside from connection to utilities, Greenery S installation requires only a level 50 x 10 ft. parcel sturdy enough to withstand its eight-ton gross weight (pavement, concrete, trap rock, and sonotubes are all adequate). Container farms can be placed practically anywhere: in deserts, urban alleys, backyards, empty lots, fields, parking lots, etc. Greenery S farms are retrofitted from new international, modular shipping containers and are therefore literally designed to travel. Read more in our blog, Creative Places to Put a Container Farm.

  • Before the farm’s arrival, you’ll need to prepare a 50’x10’ flat area that can withstand the eight-ton gross weight of the farm; concrete, pavement, trap rock, railroad ties, and sonotubes all provide the necessary support. You will also need to prepare your site with electrical, water, and internet access.

  • The Greenery S requires internet to connect to farmhand, our farm automation software. Internet access enables all sorts of smart features and remote farm management capabilities. However, the farm is still operational if internet access ever goes down.

  • Yes to both! The Greenery S carries a U.S. Department of Energy insulation rating of R28, and we have farmers operating in climates as cold as -40°F and as hot as 120°F.

  • If you live in an area prone to power losses, it can be wise to have a backup power source, such as a generator, for the farm. If the farm loses power for a short period of time, plants should survive and recover. However, if power is out for an extended period of time, you can experience a complete loss of harvest.

  • Yes! A single Greenery S is capable of growing food on a commercial scale year-round, regardless of weather or climate. We cover the who, what, where, why, and how of starting a farming business in our Project Planning Center.

  • There’s no simple answer. The success of your farm will depend on important factors like the demand for certain produce varieties in your area, the cost of electricity at your site, the channels you sell to, and more. Our Account Executives are on hand to help ensure your Freight Farm will be commercially viable before you move ahead with purchasing, but no new venture is certain to succeed.

That said, farmers that follow our best practices typically realize a complete return on their initial investment in three years or less. Use our Business Planning Tool to project your potential ROI.

  • You can expect to operate your container farm for about 10 years before major parts, like LEDs or the HVAC system, may need replacement or attention. After year one, we recommend budgeting $1,500–$2,000 annually in maintenance to keep up with individual component replacement needs. The lifespan of the unit is directly dependent on your adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule.

  • We offer a one-year warranty on every component of the farm. After that period of time, farm components are covered based on their individual warranties. We offer support and troubleshooting on all components.

  • It’s possible, yes! While we do not offer a pre-installed solar package, some Freight Farmers choose to power their units with solar energy or purchase clean energy through Arcadia.

  • Yes! Greenery farms are perfect for urban farming! Their compact footprint makes them the ideal platform for growing in tight spaces like the city. Place a Greenery in an alleyway (and even stack farms on top of one another) to provide fresh food for your community.

  • Annual operating costs will inevitably depend on costs in your area — electricity, water, and WiFi, in particular. Others depend on your individual setup, including any cost to rent the land your container sits on and any produce packaging costs.

Fixed costs include $2,400 annually for your farmhand software subscription and, if you subscribe to our nutrients, $361/month.

Learn more on our pricing page.

  • Yes! We can ship our container farms anywhere around the globe.

Electrical specifications of the Greenery vary depending voltages and frequencies of the country:

    60 Hz: 240V split-phase, single 150A connection

    50 Hz: 415V three-phase, two connections, one 32A and one 30A

Farmhand app

Farmhand

  • Farmhand is Freight Farms’ cloud-based farm automation software suite. Farmhand is built specifically for Freight Farms but can be used by growers across the vertical and indoor farming spaces. Farmhand connects to in-farm sensors, which detect environmental conditions like pH, ambient temperatures, humidity, nutrient levels, and more, all of which can be viewed and controlled from a smartphone or desktop app. It even connects to in-farm cameras to let you keep an eye on your container farm from afar. All Freight Farms are compatible with farmhand, allowing farmers to handle every aspect of their operation — other than the farm work itself — remotely. Learn more about farmhand.

  • Yes. Farmhand is what gives you the capability to operate and automate the systems in the Greenery.

  • A standard farmhand Enterprise subscription for the Greenery S costs $2,400 per year for one farm user. Additional farm users can be added for $300 per year, and additional farms can be added to a farmhand subscription at a 50% discount.

Older farm models can upgrade to farmhand Enterprise to access new features. Learn more.

  • No. Farmhand can be used with all models of Freight Farm. It is also compatible with many hydroponic growing and automation systems outside of Freight Farms’ equipment.

  • Yes. Farmhand can be used by growers across the vertical and indoor farming spaces.

  • It sure can! Farmhand sends you notifications if it detects internal climate conditions that fall outside your specified ranges. With your permission, farmhand can also transmit data to support staff here at Freight Farms. That way, if something goes wrong and you need to call us, we’ll know exactly what’s wrong and how to help.

  • Aside from environmental controls, farmhand features interactive crop planning, allowing you to configure, organize, and track each sowing and harvest. You can gain insight into how farm conditions impacted your harvests and view a synthesis of historical yields and revenue. Task management features allow you to create and assign in-farm tasks to operators, then track their completion and task history. Finally, the Recipes feature in farmhand offers pre-set growing recipes for a variety of crops, taking the guesswork out of growing.

  • Farmhand also connects you to the world of Freight Farmers and several resources. You can access farmhand Community, a forum where Freight Farmers can ask questions, share successes, and learn from peers and Freight Farms staff. Farmhand Academy, an excellent training tool that features videos and lessons to teach you how to grow in a Freight Farm, can be explored via the farmhand app. Also accessible is farmhand Knowledge Base, a trove of articles on all things container farming, business operations, and more.

  • Farmhand® Shop is Freight Farms’ store for purchasing farming tools and supplies, including our proprietary farmhand hydroponic nutrients, solutions, and growing substrate. Shop makes it simple to replenish supplies with convenient subscriptions and supply kits, all delivered right to your door.

  • Yes. One container farm requires approximately 20–30 hours of labor per week. One person can comfortably operate two container farms.

  • One Greenery S requires 15–25 hours of labor per week. New farmers can expect to dedicate closer to 25 hours a week to farming. This time range includes both farming tasks and farm maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, sanitization, and routine maintenance on equipment.

  • Yes, we provide farmers with a maintenance schedule to follow. Basic cleaning should be done on a daily basis. Weekly maintenance includes cleaning filters and calibration of sensors. Less frequent maintenance tasks include cleaning the HVAC and plant panel grow foam and saturation strips.

  • Because the Greenery S is a controlled environment, there is less risk of pests and disease. However, both pests and disease can still be an issue. The best way to prevent pests and disease is to adhere to the recommended maintenance and cleaning schedule and best practices in farming and food safety. We provide training and resources on this to all customers!

  • Weekly yields depend on the crops you’re growing and your planting and harvesting techniques (such as if you intercrop and if you harvest whole plants versus trim harvest). In an all-lettuce farm, however, weekly yield is an average of 990 heads of lettuce each week. Explore yields of a wide variety of crops in our Business Planning Tool and take a look at possible crops on our Crops page.
