Vancouver man charged after flight diverted to Halifax airport
HALIFAX – A 51-year-old man remains in Halifax police custody, following a disruption that forced a Vancouver-to-Heathrow Air Canada flight to divert to Halifax Stanfield International Airport early Tuesday.
RCMP have charged Stanislav Kalmin, of Vancouver, with three offences after he allegedly uttered threats and failed to comply with the crew’s orders.
Kalmin is facing Criminal Code charges of endangering safety of aircraft, assault with a weapon and mischief.
Police have also charged him under Section 7.41 of the Aeronautics Act, which states: “No person shall engage in any behaviour that endangers the safety or security of an aircraft in flight or of persons on board an aircraft in flight by intentionally interfering with the performance of the duties of any crew member, lessen the ability of any crew member to perform that crew member’s duties or interfere with any person who is following the instructions of a crew member.”
RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae told The Canadian Press witnesses reported Kalmin left his seat and was throwing water on passengers and crew members.
Mounties were alerted to the incident at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday, about 40 minutes before the plane landed at the Halifax airport.
Kalmin was taken to a hospital in Halifax for a mental health assessment.
Although he has been released from hospital, he has been remanded and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Wednesday.
